ABOUT
CAC
History
In the past, a child that
was a victim of abuse was often re-victimized by the agencies
and people who were supposed to help.
Professionals from child protection, legal and medical systems
would interview the child separately and repeatedly in police
stations and other environments designed for adults.
Successful prosecution was rare.
The victim and his/her family seldom received the support and
services needed.
In 1993, the Weld County Child Abuse Coalition and United Way of
Weld County recognized the need for a different way to address
the problem of child abuse: no single agency, individual, or
discipline alone has the necessary knowledge, skills, or
resources to provide the assistance needed by physically or
sexually abused children and their families.
Out of this need the Child Advocacy Center at A Kid's Place was
established.
What is A Kid's
Place?
A Kid's Place is an
important place that helps children in our community who are
victims of severe physical, sexual abuse, or are involved in the
Dependency & Neglect court system.
A Kid's Place is a warm, caring, friendly place where children
are interviewed by law enforcement officers and/or social
service caseworkers.
The staff at A Kid's Place play with, listen to, and comfort
children. Staff also assist family members and will
provide immediate referrals to needed services, like medical
examinations. Giving this kind of support helps a child victim
and his or her family begin the healing process sooner and more
successfully.
